Hi,
I just joined today and this is my first post.
I am trying to learn the trumpet at nearly 60 years old without any previous musical training. A 4 years old could play better than me.
Are marching french horn fingerings the same as a mellophone fingerings even though they use different types of mouth pieces? I know that mellophone fingerings are the same as trumpet. I'm just not sure if that translates to the marching french horn.
Are the majority of marching french horns and mellophones in the key of "F" just like a single french horn?
Thank you for your time and please excuse my unfamiliarity.

Mellophone is in the key of F and uses trumpet fingerings
Marching French Horns are usually in Bb and use the same fingerings as the Bb side of a French horn
Usually, the mouthpiece is a giveaway. Sometimes you just have to get the instrument and see what the open fundamental is.

Marching mellophone and marching french horn do use the same fingering as trumpet for their 'written notes' (assuming the written notes are for the key of the instrument - usually either Eb or F).
For a traditional single french horn in F, the usual fingering is slightly different than for trumpet - the trumpet fingering will work, but the pitch of the note might not be good.
